Acupuncture Science Courses

 

AC401– (15 Hours: 1 Credit)
Universal Precautions & Clean Needle Technique
Proper clean needle technique (CNT), as used in acupuncture practice, is covered in this course. Prohibitions to moxibustion and needling methods, handling of infectious materials, prevention methods for the spread of  infectious disease, and guidelines for a safe workplace are covered in accordance with OSHA and CCAOM standards.

  

AC501– (30 Hours: 2 Credits)
Acuanatomy & Channel Theory I: Basic Theory
This course is an in depth examination of channel and point theory. It includes classification and point functions in the body, and describes organ and channel correspondences, as well as establishing the direction and depth of each channel.

  

AC502-  (60 Hours: 4 Credits)
Acuanatomy & Channel Theory II: Main Channel Distribution
Pre-Requisites: AC401 & AC501
This in an in depth course that teaches the location, indications and contra-indications, and functions of the acupuncture points on the lung, large intestine, stomach, spleen, heart, small intestine, and urinary bladder channels.

 

AC503- (60 Hours: 4 Credits)
Acuanatomy & Channel Theory III: Regional Distribution & Extra Points
Pre-Requisite: AC502
This course completes the study of channel and point theory. It focuses on the location of acupuncture points according to regional anatomy, including the location of points in relationship to other points. It covers the location, indications, contra-indication, and functions of the kidney, pericardium, san jiao, gall bladder, liver, ren and du channels, and extra points.

 

AC511- (30 Hours: 2 Credits)
Instruments & Techniques
Pre-Requisite: AC503
This course surveys the instruments and techniques used in the various styles of Chinese acupuncture with reference to their clinical application, including moxa, sedation/tonification, fist aid, electrical stimulation, and safety issues.

 

AC512- (45 Hours: 3 Credits)
Principles of Point Combinations & Prescriptions
Pre-Requisite: AC503
In this course, students review in greater depth the functions of the classification of points such as the Five Command, Source, Connecting, Shu, Mu, Xi-cleft, and Gathering points. Topics include the principles of point selection, prescription strategies, and how to develop a treatment plan.

 

AC513- (15 Hours: 1 Credit)
Microsystem Acupuncture
Pre-Requisite: AC503
This course teaches the essentials of diagnosis and treatment of selected diseases by ear and scalp acupuncture.

 

AC514–(30 Hours: 2 Credits)
Principles of Acupuncture Treatment & Therapy
Pre-Requisite: AC503
This course teaches the practitioner how to devise a treatment plan appropriate to the patient's primary and secondary health concerns. It evaluates the relative importance of chronic and acute conditions, and guides the student in the determination of the appropriate method of treatment such as electro stimulation, cupping, moxa, and guasha.

 

AC521- (15 Hours: 1 Credit)
Japanese Acupuncture
Pre-Requisite: AC503
This course provides an overview of the techniques, theory, and practice of the various schools of Japanese meridian therapy. Students learn diagnostic methods, the eight extraordinary vessels, various treatment tools, and therapeutic methods specific to Japanese-style practice. Comparisons and contrasts with traditional Chinese practices are discussed.
