PL302– (15 Hours: 1 Credit)Human Service Skills & EthicsIn this course the student is introduced to verbal and non-verbal communication skills, teaching and learning styles, trust and confidentiality, recognition of emotional stress, counseling, integration of other modalities, informed consent, dealing with difficult patients, the ethical treatment of relatives and friends, family considerations, making referrals, ethical and boundary considerations, and sexual ethics in the therapeutic relationship. PL303– (15 Hours: 1 Credit)Medical RecordsPre-Requisite: WS302This course covers Federal, State, and local laws relating to medical records including HIPAA, note writing including the SOAP format, and treatment planning. PL304– (15 Hours: 1 Credit)AddictionologyPre-Requisites: OM522, AC512, AC514This course focuses on the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) protocol of auricular therapy for the treatment of addictions. Recent research findings are presented documenting the efficacy of this therapy. PL401– (15 Hours: 1 Credit)Herb-Drug Interactions & Ethics Using HerbsPre-Requisites: HS511, HS512This course provides information about the administration of herbs and in conjunction with western medical treatments. It discusses issues like patient compliance, contraindications with Western drug treatments, herbal claims, appropriate referral, and legal & ethical issues regarding herbal prescribing. PL402– (45 Hours: 3 Credits)Practice ManagementPre-Requisite: 8 hours of community education at EWCNM organized events.Students learn how to set up, promote, market, and manage an acupuncture practice including principles of general accounting, principles of marketing, insurance billing, fee schedules, regulatory requirements, liability insurance, and medical record keeping. Students will explore ethical issues related to the practice of Oriental Medicine. This course includes 2 hours of Medical Errors and 20 hours of Florida Laws and Rules. PL403– (15 Hours: 1 Credit)Research Methods & DesignIn this course students learn the skills necessary to investigate Western and OM medical research with computers, i.e., Databases, Internet, PubMed, and CD-ROMs. It discusses the scientific method and different models of clinical research.
